Why Become a Mentor?

Mentors gain valuable life skills and experience they can list on their college applications. One of the key and proven success factors is the role of the mentor. More and more people want to have a lasting, profound impact in their community.

They understand that the commitment of becoming a mentor can change a child’s life while helping them grow personally. Can you remember adults who paid attention to you; who believed in you; and who guided you during your childhood? These individuals served as mentors. Volunteer - Baishali Das “The opportunity to volunteer for 4 months as a volunteer under Project Balika has been a great learning experience for me. The school that I was appointed to, Sai Baba Path Public School, had ten students from 10th standard that I was asked to conduct remedial classes for after the school hours. The teacher in-charge, Ranajoy Sir was very professional and friendly, and made my experience at the school comfortable. The initial apprehension between the students and me resulted in a slow start however, they were very cooperative and we were able to make considerable advances within a few classes. It was a joy to see that they looked forward to my classes, even though they used to be tired, and kept asking who’s batch I was to take that day. I found it a bit difficult in the beginning to teach the students Hindi because of their indifference towards the subject, but Ranajoy Sir’s advice to focus on alleviating their confidence and asserting on their practice for writing made my journey with the students a success. I was told that they all managed to pass in one of the mock tests that took place after I started the classes. This experience taught me that sometimes the students lack not the knowledge or the skill to do well in exams, but the confidence that they are worthy just like any other student to get good marks. I could see that all the students had brilliant ideas and were able to speak well but couldn’t put their thoughts into words which resulted in them getting low marks. Besides all the fun talks and insights into their daily struggles and future plans, I feel grateful that I got to spend some time knowing and teaching these students. Further, I appreciate the smooth process assured by the volunteer management team at Project Balika” Feel free to reach out to us to know how you could help & contribute to the cause. #projectbalika #girleducation #volunteering #educationforall #mentorship

We’re grateful to our School to College program mentor - Meenakshi Ray! Meenakshi has been a hands-on mentor to two lovely girls, Shravani & Janavi for the past two months. - She says “It's been an incredible experience working with Project Balika on the mentorship program these past few months, supporting students with career counselling, as they strive to make the daunting transition from high school to junior college. With education for females being frowned upon to young women being forced to drop out of school, it becomes increasingly important and a social responsibility to try and make a difference in the system. Although the program was conducted virtually, it was an eye opening experience for me and it managed to cement an indelible bond between me and my mentees. I will continue to support girl child education in India with passion and renewed enthusiasm, hoping to make a change in this world one baby step at a time.” We appreciate all the efforts you’ve put in, @dr.ray_10! ❤️ The girls are thankful for your guidance. #projectbalika #mentor #impactinglives #girleducation

Volunteer - Tanaya Deole “As i was a college student myself, the children connected with me more like a "didi in their neighbourhood" than a formal teacher. As guided by the class teacher, the class was segmented into small groups which allowed awesome personal interaction with each of the students. I always used to think what can be done for the underprivileged children who are eager to seek education but did not know exactly how. Project Balika enabled that perfect opportunity for me. Post this amazing experience I would definitely love to be a part of forthcoming projects and do my small part as towards a brighter future for the kids.” #volunteer #projectbalika #volunteerwithus #girleducation #educationforall If you’d like to be a part of our virtual volunteering programme, fill the form in our bio and we’ll get in touch with you!
